Ever since Victoria Baths was featured on the restoration TV programme we’ve been wanting to visit and ultimately shoot a wedding there…so almost twenty years later here we are, finally! And Victoria Baths doesn’t disappoint and has to be now one of our favourite Manchester wedding venues. If you’re looking for an alternative quirky wedding space with a slightly dishevelled feel (in a good way) then this is the best venue in Manchester and please can we photograph your wedding day too :)
Superintendents apartment wedding preparations
Kirsty and the girls had been prepping since early doors at a Manchester hotel and wanted to capture just the final prep at the baths. We loved this space upstairs at Victoria Baths, the light airy feel and derelict (but clean) vibe is just photography heaven. Simply add the juxtaposition of fancy clothes, a chilled out bride and plenty of bridesmaid chaos, all fit perfectly in this ageing Victorian greatness.
Meanwhile downstairs Tony and the guests mingled amidst the three swimming pools and rich sumptuous green tiles. This is one venue where there’s plenty of light, with huge sky lights. Although that light was constantly changing streaming through all the amazing stained glass too.
Ceremony in the pool, Manchester style.
We’d mentioned this to a few people the day before and they’d all thought we’d get rather wet during a swimming baths wedding ceremony. But as they say ‘This is Manchester. We do things differently here.’ So, no water needed, pool drained, seats arranged, whisky barrel flowers, some great Manchester registrars, a nervous groom and were ready to get this wedding started. Descending the iconic green staircase Kirsty and her bride team were ready to ‘take the plunge’ – sorry couldn’t resist that one :/
Two wedding photographers, this is one of the times that being two instead of one really felt like it was essential. Whilst Pete was trapped in the deep end (quite literally) to photograph all the moments at close quarters, I was free to rove around the Baths and shoot from plenty of angles to make the most of this fantastic ceremony space. Shooting from poolside, arial balcony views and through that amazing stained glass – we had this gig covered :)
Angel Room drinks reception
Straight after the ceremony these guys took 15 mins to chill and grab a few couple photos, whilst their guests made there way to the awaiting fizz. I feel like iconic and amazing have been said too many times, but here we are again with celebratory drinks under the watchful colourful eye of the Angel of Purity (OK she has no eyes, but you can imagine them!) Too much colour and green? Well then plenty of space to chill out in the calming Turkish Baths just next door, perfect for a few impromptu group photos.
Yummy food was served in the second class pool, this pool is covered over so you’re literally on top of the pool, which does make getting to the bar easier! No steps to climb.
Manchester wedding party, into the evening
As the speeches came to a close, the light changes again, as the blue light streams through and the fairy lights above the second class pool come in to their own. With so much space, another tick in the box which makes this such a fab venue. no need to move any one around or shuffle tables and chairs – first dance right there, right now under the bunting and fairy lights.
Suffice to say we loved our first experience of Victoria Baths wedding photography and these two really made the most of their fantastic days celebrations. Thanks K & T for an epic day in sunny Manchester :)
